In the nights when the air is warm and the wind is gone, there is a child who waits. He waits outside, lying on his back, gazing up blankly at the stars above. The sight is dizzying, but it gives him a soothing feeling to feel nothing but the turning of the earth beneath him. His breathing comes evenly and slowly, and his brainwaves even slower. Is he even thinking at all? Not actively. He has but one thought on his mind, one he can barely hear as he stares into the heavens - his mother. He didn't know her well, as she died when he was very small, but he thinks of her on nights like this. Can she see him lying there in the street this night?

About a week had passed since the hospital visit. The twelve or so scars from Nate's first night home had all begun healing, except for one on his left wrist that he found that he could hide underneath his wristwatch that he'd gotten last Christmas. That one was raw and red. Nate cut it back open again every night after he knew that his parents had fallen asleep. The blade was more addicting than Nate had anticipated.
